Embrace the glorious experiences a winter stay at Saunton brings.
There are so many lovely ways to spend your days at Saunton – from stomping along the South West Coast Path to basking in the warmth of Source Spa and Wellness and taking a dip in the large heated pool.
Of course, days are punctuated by excellent meals in our elegant art deco dining room, but what else is there to do? We’ve rounded up a few special winter experiences to make a Saunton Sands Hotel getaway a must-do this winter.
1. Take stunning coastal walks
With three miles of pure, unspoilt golden sands at the foot of the hotel, enjoying the rejuvenation that comes from a blast of fresh sea air is easy. There’s nothing more reviving than a morning stomp along the beach or, if you’re up for something slightly more challenging, try the hillside walk behind the hotel over to the neighbouring village of Croyde – the views are breathtaking.
2. Cocoon yourself in the warmth of Source Spa and Wellness
Recharge in the luscious heat and style of our world-class spa. Experience the delights of an ice shower followed by sessions in the steam room and aroma sauna before submerging yourself in the heated Marine Vitality pool. Round off the experience by gazing over miles of pristine North Devon Biosphere through the floor-to-ceiling windows while your shoulders are gently unknotted in one of the treatment rooms.
3. Experience starry starry nights
Did you know that we are very close to the Exmoor Dark Sky Reserve? It’s the first in Europe and you’ll see many more stars there than you could image might be visible – especially if you live in a built-up area. Head out to Exmoor for the full wonder of the star-studded firmament - or simply step onto our terrace on a clear evening to see the sky teeming with stars.
4. Winter gastronomy
We’re very lucky to have an incredibly talented kitchen brigade at the hotel, led by experienced head chef Mathis Oberg (who has worked in myriad Michelin starred restaurants around the world). In The Dining Room at Saunton he crafts Modern European dishes from the finest local produce, and introduces contemporary twists to British classics. And if you’d sometimes prefer to indulge in comfort food in your own room, that’s available too.
5. Explore the region
Our top tips for winter daytrips include: visiting the unique seaside village of Clovelly where time has stood still for a hundred years; spending a day wandering through the astonishingly beautiful gardens of RHS Rosemoor (awe-inspiring, even in winter); exploring the significant grounds of National Trust property Arlington Court; and heading out to the charming Exmoor villages of Dunster and Dulverton for sightseeing and moseying. They’re all in easy reach.
