Our 8 highlights for 2018
It’s been a big year for Saunton from start to finish. With so much happening, we’ve picked our best bits of 2018 to share with you.
1. Source Spa opening
Perhaps our most exciting moment of 2018, in September we opened our world class spa facility, Source Spa and Wellness.
With its unique vantage point overlooking the rolling waves and golden sands of the beach below, our luxury spa offers guests facilities such as a multisensory thermal suite, bespoke treatments, state of the art gym, classes, swimming and vitality pools and more. Find out more about Source Spa and Wellness here.
2. Two AA rosettes
We enjoyed a glittering start to 2018 when our Head Chef Mathias Oberg and his team of chefs were awarded two AA rosettes for dining.
This accolade is awarded to excellent restaurants that aim for and achieve higher standards, better consistency and where a greater precision is apparent in the cooking. We’re hugely proud of the team for this fabulous achievement. Learn more about the Dining Room here.
3. Snow on the beach
The beast from the east swept the country in February, sprinkling magic over the North Devon coast. Our spectacular view of Saunton Sands beach was transformed into a jaw-dropping snow scene.
4. Long hot summer
Not long after the snows melted, the temperature began to rise and culminated in one of the hottest summers on record.
Glorious, sun-soaked days and balmy nights dominated for much of the summer months, meaning our guests enjoyed temperatures usually associated with foreign holidays. Our outdoor pool and beach access were very popular!
5. Tour of Britain
The Devon stage of the thrilling Tour of Britain 2018 came flying past the hotel in early September and saw Australian Cameron Meyer win the stage.
Spectators lined much of the route, which began in Cranbrook and finished in Barnstaple. We couldn’t believe our luck to have front row seats to this spectacular event.
6 No to plastic straws!
2018 has been the year of plastic action and saw Brend Hotels take further steps towards being single-use plastic free. This includes swapping plastic straws for compostable straws.
As a group we have been working behind the scenes for many years to find ways to run our businesses sustainably and reduce our environmental impact as we are passionate about our beautiful surroundings. Find out more here: https://sauntonsands.co.uk/news/no-more-plastic-straws/
7. Pages of the Sea and D Day celebrations
Our perfect vantage point of the beach means we see many beautiful sights, but none were more moving than this year’s D-Day and Armistice commemorations.
On 2 and 3 June the beach hosted spectacular events to mark the D Day anniversary, including a convoy of wartime vehicles, evening entertainment and more. And on 11 November, Saunton Sands was honoured to be one of the UK beaches chosen to take part in Danny Boyle’s Pages of the Sea event to mark 100 years since Armistice and the end of the First World War.
8. Saunton art book
In October we unveiled Saunton – A Coastal Curation, a beautiful art book that celebrates the stunning Saunton landscape as captured by leading artists such as Sandy Brown, Colin Allbrook, Roger Cockram and Philip and Frannie Leach.
With chapters on the many artists inspired by Saunton, the Atlantic and Lundy Island, and the art collected for the hotel over many decades, as well as how the area has been portrayed in photography and popular culture. Artists and their work have been captured in original photography by North Devon photographer Guy Harrop.
Saunton - A Coastal Curation is available to buy from the hotel for £25 + £3 delivery, call 01271 890212.
