31st December 2019
As 2019 draws to a close, we’re looking back on a fabulous year of awards scooping, gastronomical delights and successful events for Saunton Sands Hotel. Read on for a few of our personal highlights …
And the winner is...
In November we were thrilled to discover Saunton Sands Hotel had won the prestigious 2020 Conde Nast Johansens Best Hotel with Spa Award for Excellence at a glitzy award ceremony in London.
We also received a 5-bubble rating from The Good Spa Guide for Source Spa and Wellness – a huge achievement for our spa to receive such exceptional recognition.
We were immensely proud to sponsor the Saunton D-Day commemorative event that took place on Saunton beach earlier in the summer. It was a fantastic turnout for the D-Day event, with large crowds flocking to the beach to mark 75 years since the Normandy battle. A smashing display of military vehicles, history camps, a thrilling re-enactment of military action plus a performance by The Liberty Sisters warmed the hearts of all visitors and brilliantly captured the wartime atmosphere.
We're now busy planning a D-Day 2020 weekend break so for more information please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Charity Golf Events
We held two great golfing events for charity this year. Firstly, in June, when the hotel’s director Peter Brend along with General Manager Anthony Kingdon, Deputy Manager Shaun Sanders and previous Beachside Grill Manager James Middlemass played ‘The Longest Golf Day Challenge’ in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The team played 72 holes at Saunton Golf Club, which spans over 30 miles of walking – a huge feat and wonderful success.
In early November, our annual Charity Brian Perks Memorial Golf Day raised a stupendous £11,500 for the Calvert Trust Exmoor. The charity enables people with physical, learning, behavioural and sensory disabilities to experience exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activities. The tournament was a triumph, despite the wet and windy weather.
Winter Gastronomy Evening
The second Gastronomy Evening at our sister restaurant Beachside Grill went down a storm last month, with a congregation of South West foodies gathering to get stuck into stunning meat dishes. The event celebrated the exquisite bounty of West Country Beef and Lamb PGI (Protected Geographical Indications), with six extremely talented chefs taking turns to dazzle diners with sumptuous beef and lamb led dishes.
Lobster & Prosecco Fridays
The summer months saw Beachside Grill’s new Lobster and Prosecco Fridays draw in hungry hoards of locals and seaside day-trippers for a fresh-from-the-surf feast. Relaxing on the sunkissed terrace with a glass of bubbly in hand was heavenly – accompanied with luxurious hunks of lobster and sweeping views across to the Atlantic and it was pure perfection. Up for round two?
New ultra-luxe Source Spa treatments
We’re always keen to offer the very best treatments at Source Spa, which is why we’ve recently introduced biodynamic massages. Biodynamic massage is a form of massage therapy which is concerned with the connection between mind, emotion and how the body responds to imbalances in the nervous system. Read more about the specialist massage, and its benefits, here.
Over the past year we’ve been focusing on how we can help keep our oceans clean and reduce plastic waste. To show our commitment to cutting down on our plastic use, we’ve removed plastic straws from the hotel and introduced eco-friendly Christmas crackers for the festive season. We’re currently working toward gradually removing the use of single-use plastics too.
Surfing and bodyboard enthusiasts have long favoured Saunton beach for its incredible expanse and awesome waves, and to make the water activities that little bit easier for guests, we’ve introduced a surfboard store and outdoor shower at the top of the path to the beach. The store is made up of handy key-coded lockers, so you can safely tuck away your items before experiencing sheer exhilaration in the water.
Sundays at Saunton
At the start of the year we launched Sundays at Saunton, reoccurring special events for the family to reconnect and to enjoy the natural environment, and we’re chuffed at the feedback we’ve received. We believe Sundays are all about switching off the phone, immersing yourself in the environment whatever the weather and dining with loved ones.
Keep your eyes peeled for the 2020 Sundays at Saunton dates! Email our Events Team for more information.
On the horizon...
In spring 2020 we’ll be unveiling a gorgeous new outdoor yoga studio with unrivalled views of the Saunton landscape. After all, what could be more nourishing for the mind, body and soul than watching the waves gently lap the shore as you practice mindful exercises? More details about that to come…
We'd like to say thank you to all our guests that have made 2019 a year to remember and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2020.
