On your bike!
If you’re feeling inspired by last year’s Tour of Britain (the second stage of which came right past the hotel!) or you simply fancy getting out in the fresh air and seeing north Devon by bike, read on…
Follow the trail
Offering 32 miles of traffic free, flat and family-friendly cycling, the Tarka trail is a must for anyone wanting to explore the area on two wheels. Running from Braunton to Meeth, the trail takes you through gorgeous coastal and countryside locations. It also forms the northern section of the Devon Coast to Coast National Cycling Network.
Just a short drive from the hotel, Exmoor offers something for cyclists of all abilities: challenging hills for road cyclists, off road adventure for mountain bikers and gentle, winding routes for those looking for a more leisurely pace.
If you’ve never tried cycling on sand then how about hiring a fat bike? Like a normal mountain bike but with huge tyres perfect for peddling along the beach, it’s quite an experience. Devon Extreme Sports offer a 90 minute excursion, call 01271 864 411 for further details.
Bike hire and picnic breaks
There are several places to hire bikes locally including Otter Cycle Hire in Braunton, Barnstaple’s Tarka Cycle Hire, and Bideford Cycle Hire. Bikes can be hired for half days and full days, with some places offering hire for a number of days and transfers throughout Devon.
Both the Tarka Trail and the routes through Exmoor offer plenty of picnic spots, cafes and pubs to stop off for rest and refreshment. Some of our favourites include The Waterside diner in Chivenor, Fremington Quay cafe, and Bake and Brew, a mobile hot drinks and treats cart based at Yelland on the Tarka Trail.
