Surfs up!

If the thought of donning a wetsuit and chucking yourself into the sea makes you second guess your sanity, then maybe it's time to face your inner wild-child and embrace one of the most liberating sports on the planet. Surfing can bring all sorts of enjoyment to our lives. Take a look at our top 5 reasons why you should give surfing a go.

1. Respect for Nature

Surfing allows you to experience a new perspective on the natural world. So although you may not necessarily feel completely at one with nature after your first lesson, after spending time staring at horizons, sensing changes in wind direction, and navigating coastlines it will definitely bring about a healthy dose of eco-warrior vibes. It's no wonder so many surfers are involved in environmental stewardship such as the beach clean-ups - besides, who wants to dodge plastic bags and used jimmies when they are out in the lineup?

2. Sunrises & sunsets

Saunton sunsets are truly something spectacular. Whether you're a morning lark or a night owl, learning to surf brings with it the bonus of seeing some of the most spectacular skies nature has to offer. Bored of working your 9-5? You’ll soon want to rearrange your priorities to squeeze a sneaky sunset surf session into your day.

3. Fitness

If you’re tired of forcing yourself to go for a run or head to the gym, why not try out a new style of exercise? Surfing is so fun that it doesn’t feel like exercise. When you’re out on the waves surfing, you’ll use every body part and probably discover muscles that you didn’t know existed.  You’ll benefit from surfing by gaining muscle tone and strength as well as exercising your heart and lungs. We think it’s worth giving it a try!

4. Living in the moment

Feeling the water lapping against you as you wait in the lineup for the next wave can be some of the most peaceful moments of your life. There is an endless amount of freedom with surfing, whether it’s the sense of paddling away from your problems ashore, gaining perspective on your day-to-day life when surfing a wave, or even just floating outback and thinking of nothing at all.

5. Because it’s fun!

Last but not least, we spoke to Jack from Walking on Waves to see why he thinks you should give it a try, and to put it simply, you should try it because it’s FUN! He said that “After a long winter of lockdowns and staying at home there is no better time to jump onto a surfboard, and give surfing a go! You can't beat the thrill of riding a wave and feeling refreshed whilst getting yourself moving. Make the most of Saunton's expansive beach and lovely long rides and discover why surfing in the UK is more popular than ever."

Like the sound of surfing? Jack shared with us his top tip…

“Stop what you're doing... and go for a surf! If you're unsure about getting started, the best thing to do is join a lesson with an experienced instructor who will show you the ropes whilst keeping you safe and stoked! There is no better way to get going than jumping in and giving it a go..”

Rumour has it that Saunton is an awesome beach to teach, learn and progress on. The beach is known for its long, slow waves although the high tidal range can shake things up, the great thing is that even when busy you can escape the crowds along the 3 miles of shoreline and the atmosphere is mellow and friendly.
