Saunton Sands Beach

At Saunton Sands Hotel and Source Spa and Wellness, you are surrounded by a natural wonderland. Perched on the cliff tops of Devon, we have an epic three miles of golden sandy beach and the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean literally on our doorstep. To make it even more special, the beautiful beach is backed by the awesome sand dunes of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Braunton Burrows.

The beach could be considered our spa’s best facility. The expanse begs to be explored by the eye and by foot. Want to be soothed? Simply step outside and inhale the clean salty sea air or amble down to the beach and get your toes in the sand and get grounded.

Feeling energetic? The golden sand offers cushioned running, kind to knees and hips. Want a high-intensity workout? The towering dunes demand to be climbed, either to roll back down in play or elevate your heart rate and get your lactic acid burning by pounding up at speed, known as ‘dune running’.

The soothing sound of the sea is often hailed as a way to relax and calm your mind, so simply retreating to our post-treatment rooftop relaxation room and sun deck, pitching up in a sun lounger around the outdoor pool or getting up close and personal to the sea on the sand could be all the stress relief you need!

Love the feeling of being immersed in seawater? Take a dunk! The overall health and beauty benefits of seawater stretch far and wide and let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like playing or floating in the ocean to revive body and mind from the stresses of everyday life, relieve a hangover or to put you in a good mood! The sea here at Saunton Sands offers safe swimming for children and more nervous swimmers with lifeguarded patrols through the summer months (due caution must always be taken when swimming in the sea).  For the more adventurous; Saunton’s gentle waves are ideal to learn to surf but are also well renowned and loved by longboarders all over the world. We offer free surf lessons for guests during school holidays and weekends between June and September. Quite often the roaring Atlantic is but a millpond, but still a great playground for adventure seekers, with stand up paddleboards (SUPs) and tuition for hire. SUP-ing is a magnificent way to explore the coves and headland and admire the beach, burrows and hotel from the sea. If the wind is howling, the beach becomes a playground for kite surfers and windsurfers.

Modern research now confirms what most of us already know instinctively: the sea is not only the ultimate playground. A study has shown that marine and coastal spots are by far the happiest locations, concluding that people who visit the coast regularly tend to experience better general and mental health.

Therapeutic effects of salt water

The ancient Greeks knew all about the health benefits of mineral-rich water or “thalassotherapy” - who have long bathed in man-made pools filled with salty seawater. It was Hippocrates, the Greek physician also known as the "Father of Medicine", who first used the word “thalassotherapy” to describe the healing effects of salt water.
